I grew up never knowing my father. I had an elderly friend named Marvin who took the place of my father. He was kind, gentle and funny. This funny wedding speech story is also a tribute to my deceased friend Marvin.
When I was getting married, I was wondering who would walk me down the aisle, not only because I was a very nervous bride, but also because of tradition.
I was talking about the wedding with Marvin and he suggested that he could walk me down the aisle, no problem. I was overwhelmed!
Marvin jumped into my wedding plans with all the enthusiasm of a father and helped smooth over a lot of spots that could have been rough.
He proudly walked me down the aisle and everything went just fine.
It came time for the wedding dinner - and speeches. Now, knowing Marvin's personality, I would have thought that he would have said some things that would have made me cry.
Everyone was calling for my husband and I to say a few words. Of course, I was all choked up and when I went to talk - just telling everyone thank you for coming, etc. Marvin kept saying "speak up please" and "I can't hear you".
This was so funny because a number of my husband's distant relatives at the wedding didn't know that Marvin was my fun loving friend/father and they thought it was rude of me not to speak up so he could hear me.
I will remember that and him always.
Thanks for letting me relive this neat memory.
