Speaker's Bureaus
How to get the most for your money.

You're talking to speaker's bureaus for a keynote speaker for a big-ticket event. Now what? Good speakers can be expensive. Here are the things you need to know to get the most value for your money. Before we get started, have you had the opportunity to work with speaker's bureaus and/or professional speakers? see what - Look broadly. Don't just check with the biggest bureaus. Smaller ones often represent great speakers for lower rates. Libraries and colleges often have access to (or knowledge of) speaker's resources. Check around.
- Get organizers' desires in writing beforehand. If someone else is in charge of the event, be certain you know exactly what they are looking for. Get their specifications in writing. That way, you're prepared when you contact the bureaus and can tell them exactly what you need.
- Know your budget. Be certain to get that in writing, also. Be uprfont.
- Start early.
- Be clear. Be clear both when you are talking with the bureau, then especially when you're meeting with the speaker beforehand. Not knowing exactly what's expected is one of the hardest spots you can put a speaker in. Be specific and precise. Help them deliver quality and most speakers won't let you down.
- Find out if speakers will do attitional events while they are around. Ask if they'll give you a reduced rate for these other items. Never take advantage of anyone, but speakers are often glad to help out by coaching other speakers, giving feedback on the events, etc.
- Use single speakers for multiple events. Having a single person give a speech, moderate a discussion, and other ways to double and triple book will give the attendees a chance to grow familiar with the speaker. People work better together when they know each other, even if it's just over the course of a couple of events. You won't have to pay for transportation and accomodations for people as many people, either.
- Cultivate a good relationship with the speaker. Just like anyone else, speakers are people. Be friendly and genuine. Everyone's stressed getting everything together. Sincerity and kindness are the best ways to ensure results.
