My question is... managing speaking anxiety

(anon)

Q: Can you tell me activities to reduce speaking anxiety and nervousness?

A This is a great question, as anxiety and nervousness are things most of us have to deal with at one time or another. One of the best and easiest ways I know how to deal with anxiety is to simply close your eyes, take deep breaths, and empty your mind as best you can. After a few minutes when you feel relaxed, take yourself mentally through your presentation. Be sure to keep your breathing slow and even. Take at least 15 minutes for this shortly before you give your talk. Ask your host for quiet room or corner where you will not be disturbed to do this. If you don't have the opportunity to be alone, at least close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths and clear your mind. If this fails, it couldn't hurt to try the old standard of picturing your audience in their underwear! Good luck and happy speaking!
